United by the Sea
United by the Sea
A Creative Looe project celebrating community, heritage and creativity
United by the Sea brings together young people, families and the wider community to reconnect Looe with its fishing past and vibrant coastal culture. Led in partnership with Looe Community Academy, the project uses art, food, storytelling and public events to put local voices at the heart of the town’s identity.
Cornish Maritime Day
The project began with Cornish Maritime Day at Looe Community Academy, where Year 8 pupils were introduced to the town’s fishing traditions through hands-on workshops with fishers, artists and storytellers. The day gave students a rich insight into the skills, history and culture that shape life by the sea. Story telling through sea shanties, symbolism of sailing iconography and sustainability of fishing.
Ceramic Fish Mural
Following Maritime Day, pupils began creating a large public artwork made up of hundreds of hand-crafted clay fish. Each piece reflects the colours, patterns and stories of Looe’s maritime identity. When installed in the town, the mural will stand as a lasting symbol of unity and pride.
Taste of Looe recipe book competition
The next phase of the project is Taste of Looe — a celebration of the town’s best-loved fish recipes. Students are gathering favourites from families, friends and local chefs, and illustrating each one to create a cookbook that captures Looe’s food heritage through young eyes.
Portrait of a Fisherman – Creative Writing
Pupils are also writing original stories inspired by the idea of a fisherman’s portrait, drawing on memory, imagination and local history to bring character and heritage to life.
United by the Sea reflects Looe as a living, breathing community—not just a place for visitors. Through creativity, collaboration and celebration, the project gives young people a meaningful connection with their town and its future.
